Why is Your Social Media Marketing Not Working For You?

1. You think Facebook is free.

With roughly 890 million daily, active users and 1.35 billion users overall, Facebook is by far the largest social media site there is. In 2014, it earned 1.5 billion exclusively from advertising on their site. Coinciding with this impressive jump in revenue is the decrease in the percentage of traffic that reaches fans and followers for free.

Facebook has admitted that it is systematically decreasing the “free traffic” percentage over time to about 2 percent of all traffic. For the business owner, that means you have to “pay to play.” That said, investing in advertising on Facebook is still much, much, much less than advertising before social media. But, having a budget (even a small one!) is necessary.

2. You’re push marketing, not pull marketing.

You can’t just simply put your product on blast (push marketing). You have to attract people to you (pull marketing).

You will win followers and customers if you attract them with your message and the quality of content you share on social media. Be creative in what you share and how you share it.

3. You’re not useful.

Add value on a daily basis without expecting to make a sale right away. You have to build trust and attract people towards you (a.k.a., pull marketing), and to do that you have to share consistent and useful information or tips that are within the theme of your product, without always being your product.

4. You are trying to be everywhere.

Do not open an account on every platform because that’s what everyone else is doing! Do your research on where your audience is, and open one account. Become a marketing master on it, and then master the next.

Marketing on one social media platform takes an enormous amount of time. If you can be truly awesome on one, you will have much better results than being mediocre on 4.

Take a look at the top 4 social platforms and determine whether or not they are right for you here.

5. You’re trying to be someone else.

Particularly in small business, people will want to buy from you because of YOU. Decide on 4-8 themes that compliment both you as a person and your company message and use that as your barometer when deciding what to post and blog.

People can smell artificiality from a mile away, even on social media. So be authentic and thrive as a result.
